Project

Mission

Plot is an online platform that encourages critical reflection within our current image cultures, in which, as the overall number of images constantly increases, the time we spend looking at individual examples inevitably shrinks. In addition to reflecting on the impact of this dynamic of image production and consumption on our perceptions and thoughts, Plot also examines the abundance of narrative networks, augmented by individual and collective visual memories, that become entangled with this flood of images. While some of these imagistic narratives gain traction and become iconic, many of them just flow by in this ongoing stream, being immediately replaced by new visualizations and associations.

As a response to these conditions, Plot was launched in 2015 to offer a platform to international contributors from any field, to explore and document the multifarious potentials of images and their shifting narratives.

Structure

POINTS

In this core section of Plot authors are encouraged to create image sets (usually 2-4) that then stimulate critical or unconventional thoughts. Images can be new to Plot, already exist on the platform, or be a combination of both. Ideally, texts will consider the dynamic gap that arises from the grouping of images, thus challenging established narratives or offering new ones.

Points has an image-first approach that allows its audience to encounter the images before proceeding to the text. This initial privileging of the visual is an attempt to slow down the viewing process and to avoid turning images into mere illustrations for a text. Points Overview

LINES

In the Lines section contributors are encouraged to use a variety of moving image formats (slideshow, video, etc.) and approaches (musings, essays, etc.) for their inquiries into our current image cultures. Lines Overview

DRAFTS

This is Plot's submission section where editors and guests propose image groupings around a certain topic and invite readers across fields to submit writings that consider an image set’s potential narratives. Drafts Overview

IMAGES

Images is the visual library for all Points contributions. Visitors to Plot have the possibility to search this library, select images of their interest, and use the provided links to follow their use in the Points section. Images Overview
